- Make sure the issue is tied to a recent event, previous article, or current action on the issue.
- Keep your letter under 250 words, no more than three paragraphs. Check your newspaper for any specific guidelines.
- State your main point in the first sentence.
- Use supporting sentences to reinforce your main point.
- Conclude with an action item the reader can accomplish.
- Avoid too much emotion within your comments.
- Avoid character attacks on individuals.
- If you are responding to a recent article, reference the date and headline.
- Include your name, address, email, and phone number.
- Proof your letter before sending.
- Keep an original copy so you will know what parts have been edited.
- Not all letters are published.
- If you’ve had a letter published, wait approximately 30 days before sending another letter.
- In order to increase your chances of being published, send your letter to multiple newspapers in your region or across the state.
