Tips on how to write a letter to the editor

  1. Limit your letter to a specific issue.
  2. Make sure the issue is tied to a recent event, previous article, or current action on the issue.
  3. Keep your letter under 250 words, no more than three paragraphs.  Check your newspaper for any specific guidelines.
  4. State your main point in the first sentence.
  5. Use supporting sentences to reinforce your main point.
  6. Conclude with an action item the reader can accomplish.
  7. Avoid too much emotion within your comments.
  8. Avoid character attacks on individuals.
  9. If you are responding to a recent article, reference the date and headline.
  10. Include your name, address, email, and phone number.
  11. Proof your letter before sending.
  12. Keep an original copy so you will know what parts have been edited.
  13. Not all letters are published.
  14. If you’ve had a letter published, wait approximately 30 days before sending another letter.
  15. In order to increase your chances of being published, send your letter to multiple newspapers in your region or across the state.
