BVP's Top 3: Trump, pastors, and evangelicals

The nation faces a big debate Tuesday night ... and a big decision afterward.

BIG IDEA: Focus on principles, not personalities.

My top 3 takeaways this week as we navigate the news media landscape:

1. DONALD TRUMP NEEDS TO CONTROL THE DEBATE

I've prepared for debates as a candidate before, and I have this advice for Donald Trump on Tuesday night: Make it about the issues, not personalities. Point out your opponent's inconsistencies, then answer the questions. Keep this about a vision for America's future, and you'll be better off.

2. EVANGELICALS FOR HARRIS - WHAT ABOUT FOR JESUS?

I find the language disturbing. The idea that people dissatisfied with Trump "have a home" with Harris. No, our home is not of this world. And this movement is more about suppressing the Christian vote than empowering it. Whether you prefer Trump or Harris, Christians need to remember we are for Jesus, first and foremost.

3. HOW PASTORS CAN ENGAGE WITH ELECTIONS

As Americans, we have the responsibility of choosing our leaders. As the Church, we are the prophetic voice to the culture. But 37% of American Christians neglect to vote. Pastors have a role in reminding their congregation to be salt and light. We don't need pastors to be political, but we need them to be biblical and culturally relevant. When the Church shows up to be a voice, good things happen.
